Maryland
Historical Society
|
The
Maryland Historical Society is the state's oldest cultural institution. Through its
museum, library,
publications, and extensive educational
programs, the MdHS collects, preserves, and interprets objects
and materials reflecting Maryland's diverse heritage. The MdHS houses
the most extensive collection of objects and artifacts in the state
of Maryland, and one of the largest collections of Americana in
the world.
Since
1844, the society has been committed to publishing new scholarship
on the state's history and material culture. MdHS publications provide a forum for Maryland topics of scholarly
and general interest.
In addition to diverse permanent exhibitions, the MdHS museum
annually presents over ten changing exhibitions on topics ranging
from the history of photography and feature filmmaking in the state
to the Duchess of Windsor's style and steamboat travel on the Chesapeake
Bay.

H. Furlong Baldwin Library
|
The H. Furlong Baldwin Library of Maryland History's collections are both diverse
and substantive. The Library's over 5.4 million objects include
books, extensive genealogy indexes, photographs, manuscripts, prints,
ephemera, and more, reflecting the history of Maryland and its people.
These collections bring four centuries of Maryland history to life
to over 7,000 researchers a year and are accessible to visitors
on-line and at the MdHS campus in Baltimore.
The society sponsors a dynamic schedule of educational programs
and special events to make Maryland's history come alive for visitors
of all ages. Lectures, symposia, living history performances, weekend
programs for children, Traveling Trunks for teaching Maryland history
to schoolchildren, gallery tours, and many other programs, held
both on- and off-site, promote pride and understanding of Maryland's
rich history.
We invite you to explore the MdHS website, visit the museum, conduct
research in our library, read the books we publish, take part in
our educational programs, and learn about Maryland.
