"Francis T. Montell married Sarah Ann Bartow on September 16, 1834 shortly after he and his family moved to Baltimore from the Bahamas. It is thought that Francis' mother, Johanna, designed the quilt for her new daughter–in–law. The English–printed fabric in the diagonal sashing and border of her quilt was generally used to ornament or bind valances. Often these borders were vertically printed in duplicate so they could be cut into strips."
