"The Gantt family tradition states that this quilt was given as a wedding
gift to Mary Jane Steuart and Virgil Gantt at the time of their marriage
in 1855. The quilt belongs in the autograph album tradition. The use of
appliqué for each block links this quilt to the earlier appliqué
tradition, subsequently known as broderie perse."
